Hi Andee
Really good blog. But who is that old woman you have photographed?
Make sure that if you get an image that will stand alone print it up at least A3 to mount for the moderation.
Keep putting in the 'whole screen' info so that we can see how the photos are developing.
Have a good week

Special Ten Analysis
The Shovel - Short Film
Directed by Nick Childs
Produced by Nick Childs and Steve Hardwick
www.theshovelmovie.com won 11 awards
this film is very very very good. the story is so unexpected and the twist in the tale is just so good. i really enjoyed it. its sort of a murder mystery with an creepy edge. there is a build up all the way through and then at the end just finishes so quickly. and goes against most stories by making the bad guy actually get away with it. the filming is really good, such clear shots so you know whats happening.
The Gift - Short Film
Directed by Markus Wambganss

for me, this short film was quite strange. there were two images on the screen, and one remained constant but changed when the film changed to a different point of view. there was a sickening end to the story which is not expected. it was interesting, and what you think is going to happen just doesnt come. the storyline itself is strange. overall i like how they used the shooting and different shots to create an effect, but i didnt agree with the film. the shooting was almost abstract with alot of close ups on the right of the screen and just one image on the left. it made the whole film quite dark

Digital Toning
Base Picture
After

with this image i used the lasso tool to select certain parts of the image, then pressing ctrl J to make a newlayer i changed the hue and saturation slightly to make it a different colour.
After

for this image i just colourized the layer chaning the hue and saturation until i found a colour i was happy with.
Increase saturation without blocking out colours
After
with the original image make a new layer over the top. use the Gaussian blur tool under filter>blur>Gaussian blur and change the pixels to 5. then change the layers from normal to colour and boost the saturation to get rid of the blurred effect.
Changing colours of individual items

Short Films...
Brian Pervial, About a Girl (2001) - won a BAFTA for Best Short Film in 2002
synopsis can be found on this website - http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/filmnetwork/A19358229
This film is 9 minutes long, its a strange film, its fast cut so the watcher is kept interested in what is going on because its basically the whole thing the whole way through with little snippets of different scenes. the girl is telling the camera about her life while walking along side a canal in manchester in one if its council estates known for the poor lifestyle. the picture is dull and becomes duller throughout reflecting her lifestyle. then a shocking twist at the end when the girl says, 'ive gotten good at hiding things from mum' and then she throws the plastic bag shes carrying in the water to reveal a dead baby. i like this film. i found it almost abstract in a way because of the story line. she is shown as an ordinary young girl with young girl problems, and then the baby is revealed.
Ridley Scott, Boy & Bicycle (1958) - was Ridley Scotts first ever film he made, it was shot in black and white. shot in 16mm. first time he used a camera and its basically a day in the life of his brother. he follows him around all day, i really like the shot where he was in the back of a car filming his brother on a bike riding through the streets of where they lived.
Stefan Nadelman, Terminal Bar (2002) - a film made from black and white still taken by his grandfather when he worked and the 'terminal bar' in new york. the film consists of different photos show in a movie format with a soundtrack which was quite fast an intense. it had commentry throughout describing and telling the watcher what was going on. the commentator used a traditional new york accent in this to give it the full effect.

toning
toning is a technique carried out on black and white prints to change there colour. many early prints were sepia toned, which is a light shade of brown.
How we did it?
firstly we had three trays, first one filled with water for soaking prints, the second one filled with bleach for bleaching out the black of the prints, then the third tray filled with the coloured toner.
you leave the print to soak in the first tray for 1 minute to allow the bleach and toner to have a better effect on it.
then you put the print in the bleach leave it in for a recomended 2 minutes. if the print happens to be really dark you can leave it in longer until you you think it looks good tone, so most of the black had dulled and it looks lighter.
lastly you wash the bleach of so as not to get it in the toner then leave it in the toner for as long as you like. taking it out when you think its been toned enough and the colour its just right. if you leave it in too long it will become too darkl and you may not be able to see it properly.
i really like this technique, it brings a normal black and white print to life. it can make it look old which adds a certain effect which i think looks really really good. i think that the longer you leave you print in the bleach then the greater the effect will be. so what i did with my prints was leave it in the bleach for a while, maybe 4 or 5 minutes then only put it in the toner for about 10 seconds or a bit longer so it has a truly old look about it.
